Steeler Pride

One thing I know for sure, is that I am the only Steeler fan in my family,my son loves the Patriots, my daughter doesn't care for football, and my wife picks teams according to the colour of their uniform.

Well, first off let me tell you how I became a Steeler fan. I was out visiting with my mother and father back in 1969, after Christmas, but winter nonetheless, and while the grown ups were visiting in the kitchen, I was in their basement trying to get the antiquated TV to work.

I tuned into CBS affiliate out of Buffalo, and found a football game. It was between the Cleveland Brown and an odd looking team, that had only one symbol on the side of their helmet.
Turned out it was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who I saw had a woeful record.  Well, I loved underdogs, so I adopted the Steelers as my team.

Chuck Noll was the coach, and Terry Hanratty was the starting QB, a Notre Dame product, so he couldn't be half bad, right ?
Wrong ,he was terrible, so the following year they drafted a big hulking lug named Terry Bradshaw, who set all kinds of records for Louisiana Tech.  Big expectations for Terry, and after a yera or so of stumbling and bumbling around, he finally figured it out.

The Immaculate Reception

A playoff victory over the Raiders, in 1973 , was a magnificent achievement for a team that had gone 1-13 in 1969.

Mean Joe Greene joined the team as did the rest of the Steel Curtain defense.

Rocky Bleier was added to the backfield, and USC's Lynn Swann and John Stallworth that made this attack lethal.

Well the rest is history, 4 Super Bowl wins, then 2 more under Mike Tomlin's tutelage, with Big Ben behind centre, and a slew of great receivers, Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, and Roy Jefferson.

Well, here we are in 2019, Big Ben is out for the season ( as of the first game of the season ), and James Conner, our star RB has been sidelined for 3 weeks, but due to come back tomorrow against the Browns.

I will write about this season, but  sprinkle in some of my memories about my blessed boys from Pittsburgh.

Huddle up !
